India's commitment to inclusive education through the National Education Policy 2020 was in sharp focus at the 61st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. Jan Hubel, a master's student from the University of Oxford, underscored the policy's crucial role in advancing the rights of persons with disabilities.

Hubel addressed the restrictive nature of exam-focused systems which can marginalize students with diverse needs. Instead, India's NEP 2020 champions a competency-based framework, aimed at integrating the country's 2.1 million students with special needs into mainstream education. The Akshar Foundation's collaboration with public schools epitomizes this paradigm shift, blending academics with health and community support.

Hubel urged the council to acknowledge and back such holistic and inclusive educational systems. He emphasized the necessity of vocational training for students, suggesting that early skill development fosters confidence and smooth transitions to employment and societal participation. His advocacy extends from fieldwork with the Akshar Foundation in India to teaching roles in Hong Kong and scholarly contributions in Rajasthan.
