In a significant diplomatic move, European Union countries have rallied behind U.S. President Donald Trump's demand for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine. The EU statement stresses that the existing line of contact in the conflict should serve as a foundation for upcoming negotiations.
A host of international leaders, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and EU President Ursula von der Leyen, underscored the necessity of economic pressure on Russia until President Vladimir Putin agrees to peace terms. This consensus aims at funneling Russia's immobilized sovereign assets to bolster Ukraine's position.
As EU's top diplomat Kaja Kallas noted during a meeting in Luxembourg, ceding territory as part of a peace arrangement could set a dangerous global precedent. Meanwhile, U.S. President Trump, following discussions with Zelenskyy and Putin, has advocated for freezing the current battlelines in the Donbas region until future talks define territorial terms.
