Health officials in southeast England are grappling with a burgeoning meningitis outbreak, which as of Thursday, has led to 27 confirmed cases and two fatalities. The affected population primarily includes students across four Kent schools and one in London.

Dr. Anjan Ghosh, Director of Public Health at Kent County Council, expressed caution by stating that it is premature to confirm containment of the outbreak, highlighting concerns over possible secondary transmissions. Health Minister Wes Streeting describes the spread as unprecedented, prompting the government to expand its vaccination efforts.

The demand for the meningitis B vaccine has surged, leading to supply strain for leading pharmacy chain Boots. Despite this alarming regional rise, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control suggests the general risk in Europe remains low.
