In a pioneering move to enhance cardiac emergency care, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is set to open a dedicated cardiac emergency facility starting March 1. This development seeks to fill the critical void since the Advanced Cardiac Centre's inception in 2009, as per a statement from PGIMER.
Prof Vivek Lal, PGIMER's Director, emphasized the urgent need for this unit in the high-demand environment of a tertiary care institute like PGIMER. Historically, cardiac emergencies were handled within the main Emergency wing, which also serves a vast number of trauma and critically ill patients from surrounding regions. This approach often led to inefficiencies, especially for time-sensitive cardiac cases.
Lal pointed out that cardiovascular emergencies require prompt intervention, with every minute being crucial. He underscored that this specialized cardiac facility will not only expedite care for heart-related emergencies but also help in reducing congestion at the main Emergency wing, thereby improving the overall patient experience and care efficacy.
