Triumph Over Trauma: Woman Walks Again After Successful Bone Reconstruction

A 34-year-old woman from Delhi has successfully regained her ability to walk after doctors reconstructed a lost portion of her thigh bone using grafts from her own body. The complex procedure was performed at Max Super Speciality Hospital following a serious road accident.

The woman sustained severe open fractures in her femur and tibia when an auto-rickshaw overturned, leading to significant soft-tissue damage and bone loss. Senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Simon Thomas directed the treatment, employing a staged reconstruction method to stabilize the limb and promote healing.

This two-stage process involved using antibiotic-loaded cement initially, followed by applying a mixture of autologous and artificial bone grafts. The woman expressed relief at being able to walk and care for her child, describing the recovery as a second life.
