In a significant move, Brazil’s competition regulator CADE has chosen to broaden its investigation into Google’s use of journalistic materials. The agency aims to assess whether Google is unlawfully exploiting its dominant position in search and news markets.

Originally initiated in 2019, the probe will now consider the tech giant's evolving business practices, including the integration of AI-generated content that’s frequently used in search interfaces. A structural dependency of news publishers on Google for audience reach has raised concerns among regulators.

A new recommendation led by interim CADE chief Diogo Thomson de Andrade has directed the case back to their general superintendence for detailed administrative action. Google has expressed disagreement with CADE's stance, indicating a "misunderstanding" of its services, and pledges further dialogue to resolve inquiries.
