Spain's Budget Talks: Delayed but Critical Amid War-Driven Economic Crisis

In a move underscoring the urgency of the current geopolitical situation, Spain has decided to delay its annual budget presentation. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced this on Thursday, highlighting the government's focus on devising emergency measures to counter the economic fallout from the Iran conflict.

The planned measures, set for announcement on Friday, aim at mitigating the impact of escalating fuel and electricity prices following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The conflict has effectively driven gas prices up by over 60% since attacks began in late February.

Amidst these challenges, Sanchez has not provided a new deadline for the budget, which remains entangled in political stalemate due to a lack of majority support in parliament. The Socialist-led coalition is tasked with balancing demands from smaller parties to pass the budget, an effort that has been thwarted since 2023.
