In a multifaceted international crackdown, Europol announced the arrest of over 330 suspects across 70 countries involved in organized crime networks accused of trafficking illicit waste.
The operation led to the dramatic seizure of 127,149 metric tons of waste, 602 tons of polluting agents, 75 tons of plant protection chemicals, and 2.3 tons of mercury. Authorities also confiscated nearly 10 million euros in cash and bank accounts, highlighting the lucrative nature of this illegal trade.
Spanish authorities emphasized the criminal networks' use of document forgery and fraud to facilitate the movement of hazardous materials, representing a growing global issue with significant environmental impact and risks to public health.
