The government has requested Parliament's consent to allocate an additional Rs 2.01 lakh crore for the ongoing fiscal year ending March 31. A large portion of this sum is designated for food and fertilizer subsidies.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the second batch of Supplementary Demands for Grants in the Lok Sabha, outlining a gross additional expenditure of Rs 2.81 lakh crore. Of this, Rs 80,146 crore will be matched by enhanced receipts or recoveries from ministries, resulting in a net cash outgo of over Rs 2.01 lakh crore.

Significant allocations include Rs 19,230 crore for fertilizers and Rs 23,641 crore for the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana subsidies, alongside Rs 41,822 crore for defense. Despite the sizable expenditure, ICRA's Chief Economist Aditi Nayar anticipates that savings across ministries will mitigate potential fiscal imbalances.
