Fueling Concerns: India's Energy Security in the Crossfire

Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President and Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, called for a short-duration discussion on India's energy security on Monday. Kharge's demand comes in light of the ongoing West Asia conflict that poses emerging challenges for India.

Highlighting a Rs 60 hike in domestic LPG and a Rs 115 increase in commercial gas prices, Kharge stressed the burden on the poor as justification for the notice under rule 176. He urged for a discussion, saying it is crucial given the escalating geopolitical situation.

Kharge underscored the conflict's broader impact on India's economic stability, with about 55% of crude oil being imported from the region. The ongoing unrest is also affecting Indian expatriates, with 1 crore Indians working there and reports of casualties. India receives significant remittances from Gulf countries, adding another layer of concern.
