Trump Officials Justify Temporary Lifting of Russian Oil Sanctions
Trump administration officials defended temporarily lifting some sanctions on Russian oil to ease gasoline price spikes following the Iran war. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Ambassador Mike Waltz stressed the waiver to allow Indian oil purchases aims to stabilize the global market amid economic concerns.
On Sunday, Trump administration officials defended a temporary lift on certain Russian oil sanctions as a necessary measure to mitigate gasoline price hikes attributed to the Iran war. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, appeared on several TV talk shows to explain the decision.
The waiver, issued last week, allows India to purchase Russian oil in hopes of easing global market pressures. Waltz emphasized the 30-day pause on sanctions as a pragmatic move to facilitate the flow of millions of barrels of oil, currently stalled at sea, into Indian refineries.
These increases in fuel costs pose a new challenge for the U.S. economy, which lost 92,000 jobs last February, as consumers are hit by soaring prices at the pump. Energy Secretary Wright underscored that the perceived shortages and price hikes are driven by fear and speculation rather than actual supply deficits.
