In a fervent appeal, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh has called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the ongoing plight of Madhya Pradesh's Basmati rice farmers by granting a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Singh has warned that continued inaction could lead to widespread agitation among affected farmers.
For years, farmers in 14 districts of Madhya Pradesh have sought recognition for their high-quality aromatic Basmati rice. Despite previous promises, the Central government has yet to respond, leaving many farmers struggling with depreciated prices and economic uncertainty.
Singh emphasized the historical significance and international demand for the state's Basmati rice, lamenting how other states receive advantages while Madhya Pradesh's farmers face discrimination. The former Chief Minister has vowed to lead protests unless swift action is taken to address this pressing issue.
