Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Sunday criticized the central government's decision to raise the price of domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders by Rs 60, alleging that the policy unfairly burdens the general public.
Shivakumar's remarks came after Congress MP Prabha Mallikarjun expressed concerns about the price hike's impact on middle and lower-income households, stressing the necessity of LPG for all socioeconomic classes. Despite discontent, reports suggest that India's LPG prices are still competitively lower than those in neighboring countries such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.
The price adjustment comes after a period of stability since April 2025, where the non-subsidized rate in Delhi was Rs 853. Amid broader discussions on energy supply and availability, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri assured there are no energy shortages. Indian Oil Corporation dismissed rumors of a petrol and diesel shortage as unfounded.
