In a move to bolster its green credentials, the Indian government unveiled new standards for green ammonia and methanol production on Saturday. These measures form part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which aims to make India a global leader in green hydrogen and its by-products.
The newly announced standards set specific emission thresholds that ammonia and methanol producers must meet to be classified as 'green'. This classification requires the production process to limit greenhouse gas emissions to 0.38 kg and 0.44 kg of CO₂ equivalent per kg for ammonia and methanol, respectively.
Officials state that these standards will help reduce emissions in critical industries like fertilisers, shipping, and heavy industry, thereby reinforcing India's stance as a reliable producer and exporter of green fuels.
