The Punjab and Haryana High Court has acquitted Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, the Dera Sacha Sauda chief, in the high-profile murder case of journalist Ramchandra Chhatrapati. His lawyer confirmed the verdict, which overturns a 2019 conviction by a Special CBI court that sentenced him to life imprisonment.
Alongside him, three other convicts, Kuldeep Singh, Nirmal Singh, and Krishan Lal, were initially found guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Vikram Aggarwal delivered the recent acquittal, raising questions and discussions.
Despite this acquittal, Gurmeet Ram Rahim remains incarcerated on a 20-year sentence for raping two disciples. His parole releases, including a recent one in January, have previously provoked political controversy and sparked security alerts.
