The tensions come just ahead of the historic appointment of Sarah Mullally as the first female Archbishop of Canterbury. GAFCON, representing a large faction mainly from Africa and Asia, argues for a 'principled disengagement' from the Church's existing structures, highlighting their dissatisfaction with the progressive moves.
The Anglican Communion has not split formally, but Diarmaid MacCulloch, a retired church history professor, acknowledges the schism's presence. However, he suggests it might not be permanent, as past ruptures have resolved over time when disputes lose significance.
