A deadly toxic gas leak in north-central Nigeria has led to the deaths of 37 individuals and hospitalized 26 others, local police report. The incident took place in the early hours of Tuesday at the Kampani Zurak community mine in the Wase area of Plateau state.
According to police spokesman Alfred Alabo, preliminary investigations indicate that the miners were unknowingly exposed to a dangerous release of lead oxide, along with other harmful gases such as sulphur and carbon monoxide. These gases are hazardous in any environment, particularly in confined or poorly ventilated areas.
In response, the Nigerian government has shut down the mining site and launched an investigation into the leak. The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, expressed concerns over the miners' lack of awareness about the toxic emissions. Uncertainties remain about the legality of the mining operations, as Nigeria faces ongoing challenges with illegal gold mining.
