India's Union New & Renewable Energy Minister, Pralhad Joshi, alongside UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, officially launched the India-UK Offshore Wind Taskforce. The taskforce aims to boost India's renewable energy capability, crucial for meeting the country's target of 500 GW by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2070.
In the current financial year, India increased its solar capacity by over 35 GW and wind by 4.61 GW. Joshi emphasized significant progress in non-fossil power capacity, surpassing 272 GW, including major contributions from household solar initiatives and pump solarisation projects.
The taskforce will focus on strategic initiatives such as ecosystem planning, infrastructure development, and financing measures, drawing on the UK's pioneering experience in offshore wind, with the first phase set around the coasts of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
