India's Renewable Energy Surge: A Record-Breaking Year
India's power generation saw a record addition of over 50 GW between April and January of the current fiscal year, surpassing the previous high. Renewable energy contributed significantly, with solar power leading the way. The total installed capacity now stands at over 520 GW.

India has achieved a historic milestone in power generation capacity, adding over 50 GW from various energy sources between April and January of the current fiscal year, an official statement revealed. This significant achievement surpasses the previous record set during 2024–25, according to the power ministry.
The current fiscal year 2025–26 witnessed the addition of 52,537 MW to India's power generation capabilities, with renewable energy sources contributing the majority. Notably, solar power accounted for 34,955 MW, while wind power added 4,613 MW, underscoring the country's commitment to sustainable energy growth.
With this addition, India's total installed power generation capacity as of January 31, 2026, stands at 520,510.95 MW. This figure includes 248,541.62 MW from fossil fuels, 271,969.33 MW from non-fossil fuel sources, 8,780 MW from nuclear power, and 263,189.33 MW from renewable energy, marking an 11% increase in installed capacity.
