In a recent announcement, Russia has signaled its willingness to engage in diplomatic dialogues aimed at enhancing nuclear security. This comes in the wake of a controversial decision by the United States not to adhere to the missile and warhead limitations set by the now-expired New START nuclear treaty.
The New START treaty, established in 2010, served as a crucial agreement that capped the number of strategic nuclear arsenals both Russia and the U.S. could maintain. With its expiration at the end of this week, the two countries have yet to initiate discussions on a possible replacement treaty.
Experts in the field of security have raised alarms, suggesting that without a new treaty, there could be a resurgence in the nuclear arms race. Notably, China might emerge as a significant player in this renewed competition.
