The Electricity Amendment Bill, promising crucial reforms for the power sector, is on the agenda for the upcoming Budget session of Parliament, Power Minister Manohar Lal announced. The initiative seeks to tackle financial challenges faced by power distribution companies and ensure their profitability.

Despite recent profits reported by power distribution utilities, over 50 discoms remain in deficit, pointing to the need for revitalizing the sector. The minister highlighted that the proposed amendments focus on financial discipline, timely payments, and a federal balance to encourage efficiency and competition in the industry.

However, the bill is not without its critics. The All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF) raises concerns over potential privatization drives, citing provisions in the bill that may benefit multiple distribution licensees at the expense of government-operated discoms. The debate underscores the bill's central role in shaping India's power sector future.
