Explosion at New Mexico's Largest Oil Refinery Leads to Emergency Response

Emergency crews responded rapidly to a significant explosion at New Mexico's largest oil refinery, run by HF Sinclair, as plumes of thick smoke spread over Artesia. The fire, which began on Friday, was quickly extinguished, but not before three individuals were taken off-site for medical attention. No other injuries were reported.

Perimeter air monitoring conducted near the Navajo Refinery and a nearby community indicated no risk to public health, according to HF Sinclair spokesperson Corinn Smith, though the operational impact on the refinery remains undetermined. First responders, including police, acted swiftly to secure the area as the fire was brought under control.

The smoke had dissipated by Friday afternoon, allowing roads to reopen, while the New Mexico Environment Department prepared to assess conditions further. The refinery, strategically located at Arte's busiest intersection, handles up to 100,000 barrels per day from the prolific Permian Basin.
