India and Sri Lanka are making strides with their long-discussed bilateral power grid project. Officials from both nations participated in a virtual meeting to advance the implementation modalities of the initiative. The endeavor, finalized in April 2025, aims to connect the two countries' electricity networks.
The successful completion of the power grid interconnection will allow Sri Lanka to import electricity to manage shortages. Moreover, it will enable the export of renewable energy, contributing to the island nation’s foreign exchange reserves and diversifying its export profile.
Beyond addressing immediate energy needs, the project is poised to improve grid stability and facilitate Sri Lanka’s integration into the regional power market. Both nations have confirmed the technical parameters for the grid interconnection, marking a significant step forward for the initiative.
