In a promising turn for South Africa's agricultural sector, maize farmers are gearing up for a substantial yield increase this coming season. Projections indicate a 27% hike in maize production for the 2024/2025 period, as assessed by the Crop Estimates Committee (CEC).
The CEC reports this optimistic forecast estimates a harvest of 16.325 million metric tons, a notable ascent from the prior season's 12.85 million metric tons. It marks a growth from their September 30 forecast, which initially projected the 2025 harvest at 16.179 million metric tons.
This anticipated bounty consists of 8.336 million tons of white maize destined for human consumption, alongside 7.989 million tons of yellow maize, primarily utilized in animal feed, underscoring the diverse applications of this critical staple crop in the agriculture sector.
