VOC Port: Pioneering Green Maritime Future at India Maritime Week 2025

V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tuticorin has emerged as India's epicenter for green shipping corridors, demonstrating leadership in renewable energy and sustainable shipping practices. The port took the spotlight during India Maritime Week 2025 at the NESCO Exhibition Centre in Mumbai, as it hosted 'Green Maritime Day'. This was organized by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways (MoPSW) with partners RMI and NCOEGPS.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal emphasized India's commitment to becoming a green maritime leader. He stated, "India is strategically poised to become a hub for green corridors, aiming to rank among the premier maritime nations by 2047." Other notable speakers included Bhupender Yadav, Minister of Environment, who highlighted decarbonization efforts, and Marianne Sivertsen Naess, Norway's Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy, who delivered the keynote address.
Susan Kumar Purohit, head of the VOC Port Authority, cited the port's initiatives like green hydrogen hub designation and renewable energy projects which are set to contribute ₹1 lakh crore in sustainable investments, supporting India's overarching goal of ₹10 lakh crore in maritime growth. These strategies underline VOC Port's crucial role in driving India towards a sustainable maritime future.
