India has made significant strides in oil palm cultivation, adding 52,113 hectares this fiscal year, with notable growth in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, according to a senior government official. This expansion is part of the National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Palm (NMEO-OP) scheme, which aims to reduce the nation's reliance on imported edible oils.

Since its launch in August 2021, the scheme has increased the total oil palm cultivation area to 2,41,000 hectares across the country, contributing to a nationwide coverage of 6,00,000 hectares. The Ministry of Agriculture has set an ambitious target to further expand cultivation to 2,00,000 hectares by the 2025-26 fiscal year.

The government has undertaken initiatives such as importing germinated seeds, establishing seed gardens, and approving 24 mills with a capacity of 638.5 tonnes per hour to boost domestic production. With 2.8 million hectares of identified suitable land, oil palm offers a yield ten times higher than traditional oilseeds like soybean and sunflower.
