The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), under the leadership of Mayor Sardar Raja Iqbal Singh, has launched an environment-friendly campaign aimed at collecting used diyas and idols after the festive season in the National Capital. The initiative, in collaboration with the Why Waste Wednesdays Foundation through the Swachh Vaahini project, which is backed by TWEPL's CSR activities, is being carried out with various Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) in Delhi.
Mayor Singh disclosed that on October 21, 2025, the MCD successfully amassed about three metric tonnes of diyas across the city. These items are being sent to Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste processing plants for safe environmental disposal. Singh emphasized the importance of the initiative as a move towards responsible waste management and urged citizens to join in by segregating and handing over their festive waste to Swachh Vaahini teams.
The MCD invites citizens to request pickup services for used diyas and idols by sending a WhatsApp message to 8002044982. In related news, Delhi's CM Rekha Gupta announced the deployment of 1,000 water sprinklers and 140 anti-smog guns to reduce dust pollution, alongside intensified inspections at construction sites to enforce dust control. Despite these efforts, post-Diwali, Delhi experienced heavy smog, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching a 'Very Poor' 351 as of October 21, according to the CPCB.
