In a pioneering move toward sustainable energy development, IIT Madras and Coal India Limited unveiled their strategic collaboration to establish a 'Centre for Sustainable Energy', aiming to expedite India's transition to a low-carbon future.

The formal agreement was inked by V Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, and Achut Ghatak, Director (Technical) of Coal India Limited, at a ceremony held at the IIT Madras campus. The initiative underscores a commitment to fostering economically viable and environmentally responsible energy solutions, supporting India's net-zero emissions target by 2070.

The centre will spearhead cutting-edge research in key areas such as sustainable materials, mine repurposing, fleet electrification, and energy storage innovations. Initial projects will explore sustainable polymer development from coal, solar panel recycling, and the electrification of mining operations.
