In anticipation of the Ardh Kumbh 2024, the Haridwar administration is planning a strategic relocation of raw meat shops out of the urban limits, specifically to Sarai village. This proposal seeks to uphold religious sentiments and improve hygiene conditions in the city.
Haridwar Mayor Kiran Jaiswal has confirmed that the proposal will be presented at the upcoming Municipal Corporation Board meeting. Currently, the bylaws prohibit meat and liquor sales within a five-kilometre radius of Har Ki Pauri. Despite this, illegal operations continue to pose challenges.
The decision is supported by religious leaders like Mahant Ravindra Puri, who highlights the need to preserve the sanctity of the holy city, especially with millions expected during the upcoming festival. State officials have also expressed their commitment to implementing necessary measures for the event's success.
