Georgia mourns the loss of Patriarch Ilia II, the long-serving leader of the Georgian Orthodox Church who passed away at the age of 93. Widely respected, Ilia II was hospitalized in critical condition before his death late Tuesday.

Known as an epochal figure, Ilia II's leadership spanned from the Soviet era through Georgia’s post-independence years. Shio Mujiri, who has temporarily taken over church leadership, emphasized the patriarch’s profound impact, calling it a tremendous loss for the Orthodox community.

Having guided the church for nearly five decades, Ilia II's tenure left a significant imprint on Georgia's spiritual and public life. The church plans to elect a new patriarch within the next two months as it navigates this pivotal transition.
