The Kennedy Center's board of directors decided on Monday to cease operations for two years after the July 4 festivities. This decision, long anticipated, follows a spate of resignations and event cancellations during Donald Trump’s second term.
Despite claims of necessary repairs driving the closure, many in the arts community attribute the shutdown to Trump's influence over the center. On Monday, the board also appointed Matt Floca as the new CEO and executive director, replacing Richard Grenell. Trump praised Grenell for his contributions despite backlash over programming changes and financial challenges during his tenure.
The board, hosted by Trump at the White House, unanimously supported the closure, though Rep. Joyce Beatty wasn’t allowed to vote amid legal disputes over her exclusion. The renaming of the venue to the Trump Kennedy Center and the subsequent outcry from the arts community underscore the tensions during Trump’s influence over cultural centers.
