The Mizoram Assembly will deliberate on a significant resolution aimed at securing national recognition for the Mizo language next week. School Education Minister Vanlalthlana is slated to present the resolution after the question hour on Monday, according to assembly secretariat officials.
The resolution seeks to have Mizo, the lingua franca of various Mizo tribes, included in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution, currently listing 22 recognized languages. The proposed move follows consultations between Chief Minister Lalduhoma and the Mizo Language Development Board's Eighth Schedule Study Group.
Advocates argue there's strong community support across the state, and a prior proposal to this effect was not adequately pursued. The study group recommends forming a dedicated task group to comprehensively resubmit the request, noting that Mizo has been the state's official language since 1974.
