Reviving History: Restoration of Chennai's Iconic St George's Cathedral

St George’s Cathedral, a historic landmark in Chennai, has undergone significant renovation, church officials announced. The cathedral, which is over two centuries old, faced deterioration due to environmental challenges and urban development pressures.

The tropical climate of Chennai contributed to various structural issues, including cracked plaster, corroded metal elements, timber decay from termites, and water damage. These issues threatened the cathedral's structural integrity, prompting a careful restoration focused on architectural conservation.

Professor Arun Menon of IIT Madras played a pivotal role in the project. The cathedral, historically vital as the mother church of the Church of South India, has been revitalized to ensure its continued service to the community and preservation of its colonial-era architecture.
