Th Muivah, the leader of the National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Isak-Muivah), made a rare and momentous return to his native village of Somdal in Manipur's Ukhrul district on Wednesday after more than 50 years, officials reported. The 91-year-old Naga leader, who is pivotal in ongoing peace talks with the Indian government, was greeted by thousands of Nagas dressed in traditional attire as he arrived by helicopter at the district headquarters.
The visit unfolds against the backdrop of severe ethnic violence in Manipur between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zo groups since May 2023, a conflict that has resulted in over 260 deaths and left thousands homeless. Muivah's presence in the region is seen as a beacon of hope and a significant cultural moment for the Naga community, with people describing it as an emotional event.
The Tangkhul Naga-majority district prepared thoroughly for his arrival, with cleanliness drives and displays celebrating Naga leaders. Muivah plans to stay in Somdal for a week before proceeding to Dimapur on October 29, marking a noteworthy moment in both local and national contexts.
