The body of one of the six missing crew members from an overturned cargo ship has been recovered near the Northern Mariana Islands. The ship faced distress amid Super Typhoon Sinlaku. The US Coast Guard made the grim discovery using an underwater drone.
The cargo ship, named the Mariana, alerted the US Coast Guard on April 15 regarding the loss of its starboard engine, necessitating urgent assistance. By the following day, all communication with the vessel ceased. Initial search efforts were hampered due to strong winds.
Eventually, the overturned vessel was located approximately 40 miles northeast of Pagan Island. Additional debris, including a partially submerged inflatable life raft, was found around 110 miles away. The incident highlights the destructive impact of Typhoon Sinlaku on the Northern Marianas, a US territory.
