In a key step toward boosting regional industrialisation and economic growth, Trade, Industry and Competition Deputy Minister Zuko Godlimpi, alongside Gauteng MEC for Economic Development, Agriculture and Rural Development Vuyiswa Ramokgopa, will lead a public participation session on the proposed Vaal Special Economic Zone (SEZ).

The interactive engagement, to be held in Vereeniging, is part of a broader consultation process following the publication of the proposed SEZ designation by Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau in the Government Gazette.

Public Given 30 Days to Shape SEZ Development

The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) has opened a 30-day public comment period, inviting residents, businesses, and stakeholders to provide inputs on the proposed development.

"The session will provide residents with an opportunity to express their views and share ideas on the proposed SEZ with national, provincial and local government leadership," the department said.

The consultations aim to ensure that the development reflects local priorities, promotes inclusive growth, and addresses community concerns.

Strategic Location to Drive Industrial Growth

The proposed Vaal SEZ will span five key land parcels:

  • Heidelberg

  • Rietspruit

  • Langlaagte

  • Zwartkopjies

  • Kookfontein

These sites have been strategically identified due to their proximity to major population centres and critical transport infrastructure, positioning the SEZ as a potential hub for manufacturing, logistics, and investment.

Aligning with District Development Goals

The Vaal SEZ is closely aligned with the Sedibeng District Municipality's District Development Model (DDM) and its District One Plan, which aim to promote coordinated planning, economic integration, and sustainable development across the region.

By integrating national, provincial, and local development priorities, the SEZ is expected to:

  • Attract domestic and foreign investment

  • Stimulate industrialisation and job creation

  • Enhance infrastructure development

  • Support small and medium enterprises in the region

Collaborative Approach to Economic Transformation

The public participation session is being hosted through a partnership between the dtic, Gauteng Provincial Government, and Sedibeng District Municipality, reflecting a multi-level governance approach to economic planning.

This collaborative model is designed to ensure that the SEZ delivers tangible benefits to local communities while contributing to broader national economic objectives.

Towards Inclusive and Sustainable Development

Special Economic Zones are a key instrument in South Africa's economic strategy, aimed at accelerating industrial growth, boosting exports, and creating employment opportunities.

The Vaal SEZ, if designated, is expected to play a transformative role in revitalising the region's economy, particularly in areas affected by industrial decline.

As consultations begin, the government has emphasized the importance of community participation in shaping the future of the project—ensuring that development is inclusive, transparent, and aligned with local aspirations.
