In light of ongoing energy volatility in West Asia, India reinforces its energy security by maintaining coal as a key component of its power strategy. As global fuel concerns rise, coal serves as a critical anchor, ensuring consistent power availability to essential industries like steel and cement, which are vital to economic growth.

The Ministry of Coal has confirmed that domestic coal production aligns with surging demand, supported by improved logistics, including enhanced rail transport. As part of these efforts, stockpiles at mine-heads have been increased, with Coal India Limited’s reserves growing from 106.78 MT in April 2025 to 125.54 MT by March 2026. Additional reserves boost the nation's capacity to meet consumer needs.

Notably, thermal power plants hold 53.41 MT of coal, covering almost 23 days of current consumption levels. The government is facilitating coal supply to small and medium enterprises through State Nominated Agencies, while Coal India Limited has intensified e-auctions to ensure market stability. The Ministry of Coal continues to emphasize policy support and stakeholder engagement to secure an uninterrupted supply chain, balancing coal's role with renewable energy expansion amid geopolitical tensions.
