EIB, PATRIZIA and Mitsui Launch $300M Fund to Accelerate Asia’s Clean Energy Transition
The EIB’s $70 million commitment will help anchor the Emerging Asia Sustainable Infrastructure Fund (ESIF), which has a target size of $300 million.
A major new climate investment initiative targeting emerging Asian markets has been launched, with the European Investment Bank's development arm (EIB Global) committing $70 million as a cornerstone investor in a new sustainable infrastructure fund led by PATRIZIA and Mitsui & Co.
The move is aimed at mobilising private capital at scale to support renewable energy, sustainable cooling, and low-carbon mobility—key pillars of Asia's energy transition.
Anchor Investment to Unlock $300 Million Fund
The EIB's $70 million commitment will help anchor the Emerging Asia Sustainable Infrastructure Fund (ESIF), which has a target size of $300 million.
Key features of the fund:
-
Focus on mid-market equity investments between $20–70 million
-
10-year investment horizon
-
At least 50% allocated to clean energy and climate-resilient infrastructure
The strategy is designed to attract institutional investors and crowd in additional global capital into high-impact projects.
Targeting High-Growth Asian Markets
The fund will invest across some of Asia's fastest-growing economies, including:
-
India
-
Indonesia
-
Vietnam
-
Thailand
-
Malaysia
-
Philippines
These markets are seen as critical to global decarbonisation but face a significant infrastructure financing gap.
PATRIZIA's Head of Infrastructure for Asia, Saji Anantakrishnan, said:
"Emerging Asia is at the forefront of the global energy transition, but funding gaps remain. This investment strengthens our ability to scale high-impact infrastructure platforms."
Focus on Renewable Energy, Cooling, and Mobility
The fund will prioritise three key sectors:
-
Renewable energy – expanding clean power generation
-
Sustainable cooling – addressing rising energy demand in rapidly urbanising regions
-
Low-carbon mobility – supporting cleaner transport systems
These sectors are essential to reducing emissions while supporting economic growth and urban development.
EU's Global Gateway Strategy in Action
The investment aligns with the European Union's Global Gateway initiative, which aims to strengthen global infrastructure partnerships while addressing climate challenges.
EIB Vice-President Nicola Beer said:
"This investment shows how we can mobilise European and global capital to build clean, resilient infrastructure while strengthening the EU's economic footprint."
Immediate Deployment Through Scalable Platforms
At launch, ESIF will be seeded with three established platforms:
-
Parkwise Inc. (Philippines) – mobility and smart parking solutions
-
Buskowitz Energy Inc. (Philippines) – renewable energy development
-
Kaer (multi-country) – sustainable cooling across Asia
This provides immediate exposure to scalable, revenue-generating assets across the region.
Leveraging a 15-Year Strategic Partnership
The fund builds on a long-standing collaboration between PATRIZIA and Mitsui, which spans over 15 years of infrastructure investment across Asia and emerging markets.
Mitsui's Takashi Nakai noted:
"This reinforces our shared commitment to mobilising capital into high-impact energy transition solutions."
The fund is managed through PATRIZIA MBK Fund Management (PMBK), the joint venture between the two firms.
Driving Jobs, Growth, and Climate Impact
Beyond environmental benefits, the fund is expected to:
-
Create skilled jobs across multiple markets
-
Support local industries and supply chains
-
Deliver measurable social and economic impact
EIB Global's involvement will also help strengthen:
-
Governance standards
-
Environmental and social safeguards
-
Investor confidence
Building on a Strong Track Record
The new fund follows the success of the earlier Emerging Markets Infrastructure Fund (EMIF), launched in 2008 and fully exited by 2020.
Over the past five years, the EIB has supported €2.7 billion in sustainable investments globally through similar partnerships.
A Strategic Push for Asia's Energy Transition
With rising energy demand, urbanisation, and climate pressures, emerging Asia represents one of the most critical regions for global clean energy investment.
The ESIF initiative marks a significant step toward:
-
Scaling private capital for climate infrastructure
-
Accelerating regional decarbonisation
-
Building resilient, future-ready economies
As global investors increasingly turn to emerging markets, this partnership positions Asia at the centre of the next wave of sustainable infrastructure growth.
