Rupee Under Siege: Surging Oil Prices and Geopolitical Tensions Intensify Pressure

The Indian rupee tumbles to a new low against the US dollar as escalating Brent crude prices and geopolitical tensions weigh heavily. While the RBI intervenes to stabilize the currency, experts caution that sustained foreign investment outflows and bullish technical charts suggest ongoing volatility and pressure on the rupee.

The Indian rupee reached a fresh intraday low of 92.49 against the US dollar on Friday, primarily driven by a resurgence in Brent crude oil prices, which surged to approximately USD 100 per barrel. This development has intensified pressure on the domestic currency, reflecting broader economic tensions.

Currency experts have indicated to ANI that the rupee's depreciation is unlikely to abate in the near term. The ongoing geopolitical crisis has contributed to soaring global oil prices and a fortified US dollar, both exerting downward pressure on the rupee. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is actively intervening in the foreign exchange market to mitigate the rupee's decline and curb excessive volatility, although there is skepticism about the limits of such intervention.

K N Dey, a seasoned currency analyst, reported that the rupee opened at 92.34/35 on Friday, symptomatic of the relentless pressure due to escalating crude prices. Dey emphasized the speculative nature of the current market environment, with intraday volatility of 7 to 8 percent. He also highlighted significant foreign investor outflows from Indian equities, amounting to roughly USD 5 billion in just eight trading days, which has exacerbated the rupee's woes. Meanwhile, Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, noted that the USD/INR pair is trading in a narrow range, with rising crude prices and demand for the US dollar amid geopolitical uncertainties placing emerging market currencies at a disadvantage.
