On Sunday, Indian airlines grounded 279 international flights as tensions in the Middle East escalated, disrupting global travel plans. The civil aviation ministry cited airspace closures and restrictions as the primary causes of the widespread cancellations.
Aviation officials reported that out of the planned 49 flight operations from West Asia to India, a staggering number were called off. Mumbai airport alone saw 66 cancellations, including both departures and arrivals, as the crisis unfolded.
To mitigate the impact, Air India announced 78 extra flights on nine international routes between March 10 and 18, offering additional travel options amid the geopolitical turmoil.
