Deportation Dilemma: The Case of Any Lucia Lopez Belloza

A U.S. judge dismissed the lawsuit of a college student deported to Honduras after she declined to board a return flight arranged by the government. The decision marks a significant moment in an ongoing legal battle involving Any Lucia Lopez Belloza, a freshman at Babson College, Massachusetts.

Lopez Belloza, who came to the U.S. from Honduras as a child, was deported despite an existing judicial order prohibiting such an action. U.S. District Judge Richard Stearns ruled he lacked the jurisdiction to continue her case, as she was already sent to Texas on the flight when it was filed.

Her decision not to return stems from ICE's assurance that they would attempt to deport her again upon arrival. Although Stearns had previously commanded the administration to correct its mistake, Lopez Belloza's refusal to cooperate halted her legal recourse. Her attorney, Todd Pomerleau, plans to appeal the ruling.
