Delhi Metro Ramps Up Security with Aluminium Wiring Overhaul

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is countering frequent copper cable thefts with a strategic shift to aluminium wiring across its expansive network. The metro's revamped security approach involves a Rs 32.59 crore investment aimed at installing aluminium cables over 175 kilometers of its operations.

This overhaul addresses the most susceptible sections, like the Yamuna Bank line, the Airport Express Line, and the Pink Line. Targeting cable thefts, which have persistently disrupted services, the transition to aluminium is expected to minimize these criminal incidents and improve power and signalling reliability.

The DMRC cites last year's 89 cable theft incidents, including significant disruptions in March affecting the Red Line. Despite preventive measures such as cemented cables, anti-theft clamps, and concertina coils, thefts occasionally result in operational slowdowns. By opting for aluminium wires, DMRC aims to fortify its services against theft while maintaining timely train schedules.
