Traders in the bustling Sarojini Nagar area of southwest Delhi raised their voices on Wednesday against unlicensed street vendors whom they accuse of encroaching on spaces meant for pedestrians, drastically reducing customer footfall in the formal market.
Led by Ashok Randhawa and Ashok Kalra, leaders of the Sarojini Nagar Traders' Associations, these merchants allege that up to 15 illegal shops have been swiftly installed, questioning the transparency of these processes. The traders also flagged security and overcrowding issues, notably during peak hours at the metro station.
In response, a memorandum was submitted to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, urging action to halt unauthorized vending and take safety measures involving multiple city agencies to protect thousands of commuters frequenting the market.
