The month of December witnessed significant turbulence in the Indian aviation sector as more than 10.4 lakh passengers experienced flight cancellations. A staggering 93 percent of these disruptions were associated with IndiGo, the nation’s largest airline, according to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Overall, scheduled domestic airlines paid out over Rs 24.27 crore in compensation and facilities to affected passengers, with IndiGo's share amounting to Rs 22.74 crore. The cancellation rate for all domestic flights stood at 6.92 percent, but IndiGo alone faced a higher disruption rate of 9.65 percent.

The challenges faced by IndiGo resulted in its market share dropping to 59.6 percent in December, down from 63.6 percent in November. Meanwhile, competitors like Air India Group and Akasa Air saw their shares rise to 29.6 percent and 5.2 percent respectively.
