In a major traffic disruption, the Mumbai-Pune Expressway has been paralyzed following the overturning of a gas tanker in the Khandala Ghat section. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday evening, has left hundreds of vehicles stranded and both carriageways severely congested.
Officials report that propylene gas, a highly flammable substance, has been leaking from the overturned tanker, prompting the deployment of teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to handle the situation. Despite ongoing efforts, traffic remains backed up over a 12-km stretch, affecting numerous passengers overnight.
The Maharashtra Highway Traffic Police have redirected Mumbai-bound traffic onto the Pune-bound lane and urged motorists to avoid the expressway. As the operation continues, experts are working to safely release the remaining gas, with authorities estimating that normal traffic flow may not resume until late Wednesday evening.
