In Ulsan's Mipo Industrial Complex, construction activities for a new AI data center, a collaboration between SK Group and Amazon Web Services (AWS), are in full swing, according to a report by Maeil Business News Korea’s Pulse. The site is set to be Korea's largest AI-focused data center by 2027.
Spanning 66,000 square meters, the facility will rise five stories above ground to 47.7 meters in height. It will accommodate up to 60,000 graphics processing units (GPUs), vastly surpassing the capacity of SK Telecom Co.’s Haein cluster, which contains 1,000 GPUs. The data center will prioritize cooling efficiency, using an innovative hybrid system combining air and direct liquid cooling methods.
The cooling infrastructure is crucial as AI systems generate significantly more heat than traditional servers. By employing a direct liquid cooling method, where coolant touches chips directly, the center ensures optimal performance. The power supply is backed by SK's internal synergies, with AWS CEO Matt Garman having personally overseen the project's progress.
