India is set to broaden its rice export base by venturing into emerging markets including the Philippines, Gambia, Liberia, and Ghana, according to Dev Garg, Vice President of the Indian Rice Exporters Federation and Director of Shri Lal Mahal Group. Garg made this announcement ahead of the Bharat International Rice Conference (BIRC) 2025.

Highlighting the significance of this endeavor, Garg described the attendance of agriculture ministers from these nations as a 'major milestone' in enhancing India's rice export ecosystem. India intends to solidify its presence in regions where countries like Pakistan and Ireland currently have a stronghold, focusing on diverse rice varieties such as GI, non-basmati, and basmati that can replace substantial imports.

Anticipated deals include MoUs worth Rs 25,000 crore to be signed during the conference. These collaborations will involve state governments, agricultural boards, and international importers, targeting a boost for India's GI and premium non-basmati rice. The event will also premiere an AI-powered color-sorter-cum-grader machine aimed at improving rice grading efficiency and reducing waste, supplementing efforts to cut the 25% white rice drop to 10%.

Moreover, the conference will witness the launch of 12 organic rice varieties and an online portal by National Cooperative Organics Limited. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade will showcase a trade facilitation platform, while new initiatives on agricultural innovation and job creation will be declared. Further, ICAR and IRRI will conduct training on sustainable farming, with Telangana aiming to manage a surplus of 277 lakh metric tons of rice. The event has already registered 5,484 participants, including over 500 startups and small industries, promising an impactful gathering with contributions from Bihar's 20 farmer producer organizations.
